Artificial Flowers 1.1

Statement

Artificial Flowers are the only flowers I can keep alive! My design began by conversing with an artificial intelligence large language model. I played with juxtapositions of patterns upon patterns. My love of creatively repurposing clothing and found objects; math, especially prime numbers; and challenging technical construction influence and propel my creations.

As the algorithm moves from node to node, the stitching represents different functions including f(x)=x, f(x)=ln(x), f(x)=b^x, f(x)=sin(x), f(x)=x^2, and a Fibonacci series. Quilted using buttons on the reverse side to represent how much of AI runs in the background. Often AI generated images have "not quite right" elements and these flowers are no exception: doilies for Queen Anne's lace, vintage ladies' gloves for foxgloves, silk ties for irises, socks for phlox, felted wool for rocks, and unusual prints instead of solid colors everywhere.

Techniques

Pieced background, stems, and leaves; appliquéd floral and stone elements; 3-D leaves embedded in seams; fused components; and embroidery embellishments.

Materials

Recycled gloves, ties, plastic placemat remnants, socks, upcycled shirts, embroidery floss, buttons, felted wool, cotton fabric.
