Artificial Flowers 1.0

2025

17" x 42"

Statement

Artificial Flowers was designed conversing with a large language model. AI relies on mathematical functions and uses prime numbers. There are prime numbers of floral stems and colorways of each floral element. As the algorithm moves from node to node, the stitching represents different functions including f(x)=x, f(x)=ln(x), f(x)=b^x, f(x)=sin(x), f(x)=x^2, and a Fibonacci series. Quilted using buttons on the reverse side to represent how much of AI runs in the background. Often AI generated images have "not quite right" elements and these flowers are no exception: zippers for zinnias, denim for delphinium, buttons for allium, and unusual prints instead of solid colors everywhere.

Techniques

Pieced background, stems, and leaves; appliquéd floral and stone elements; 3-D leaves embedded in seams; fused components; and embroidery embellishments.

Materials

Denim, upcycled shirts, embroidery floss, buttons, zippers, felted wool, cotton fabric.
