During a recent bout of Swedish Death Cleaning, I came across a paper I wrote in elementary school about "Why I Want To Be an Artist." It has been a non-linear path since then, with detours into engineering, finance, insurance, and non-profits, but art has always been there. Early in my artistic journey, I worked primarily in watercolors, frequently featuring quilts. I now enjoy working through my fabric stash to create fabric paintings using commercial fabrics in situ and found objects.
Working with colors and patterns, recycling fabrics and other materials, and auditioning fabrics is fun! Bright colors inspire me and juxtapositions of patterns fascinate me. I enjoy the juxtaposition of patterns on patterns, so that you no longer see the individual fabric prints, but instead see the overall gestalt of colors.
The immediacy of watercolors is both challenging and inspiring. Through vivid pigments, my watercolor paintings enhance the ordinary and distill the essence of the subject matter, translating images into colorful abstractions. As my work evolves, I find my paintings are becoming more about patterns and simplified rhythms.
